What You Need to Know About Mindsets

09May08

I’ve just started reading Toward a Psychology of Being by Abraham Maslow and I think that Maslow brings up an excellent point about mindsets. The context of this quote is that Maslow is talking about the differences between European psychologists and American psychologists. He says that:

The Europeans are stressing the self-making of the self, in a way that the Americans don’t. Both the Freudians and the self-actualization and growth theorists in this country [America] talk more about discovering the self (as if it were there waiting to be found) and of uncovering therapy (shovel away the top layers and you’ll see what has been always lying there, hidden). - Abraham Maslow

I think the European point of view that Maslow is talking about is very important for achieving personal growth. Its true that we are limited in our personal growth by things like genetics and how we’re raised, but instead of thinking about those limits as something negative, think of them as potential ranges.

happiness scale

My genetics and my childhood and various other factors limit my happiness to somewhere between 50% and 90%. So going back to Maslow and European psychologists, the mindset you should have is not that there is a better version of you just waiting to be discovered within yourself, but rather that you are a project that can be worked on, fine-tuned, and upgraded.

Your focus should always be on growth. Your potential to be a truly great version of you is just that, potential. For anything to come of potential, a mindset centered around growth is extremely essential.
